This is the K5TYP clubhouse in 1977. The large tower is a piece of aero beacon tower acquired by the club from surplus. The antenna being mounted on top is a long spaced 5 element 20 meter beam. It was constructed using a piece of TV tower as the boom. The beam, which we called "Big Mama," was so effective that the first contact was with Australia using Merle Eastman's (WA1JUP) Yaesu FT-101B barefoot. The Australian ham was convinced we were using a linear, even though we were not. Unfortunately, the base commander was not amused, and our Great Antenna had to be removed. Before that happened K5TYP took advantage of this antenna to make other such QSO's all over the world for nearly a two week period.
