Bill Guy (W7PO, then W7KHC) engaged in a QSO. One of our QSOs that we all remember well occurred one evening on 10 meters with a ham named "Butch" in the 20th Air Force on Guam. In the discussion, thinking he was of lowly noncom rank as us, we were quite candid in discussing favorite gripes and faults of the base, school
and some of our superiors and officers. At the end of the very friendly and cordial QSO our fellow ham on Guam asked us if we would be willing to pass along a
message to a friend of his on the base. We said sure, go ahead with the message. He followed with a message sending his greetings to the commander of the base followed by his handle, General "Butch" Griswold, Commander 20th Air Force, Guam. That about blew the minds of us 19 year olds. After that QSO I kept track of the news items relating to the General from that moment to his later activities as Commander in Chief of SAC, Commander of the U.S. Third Air Force in the UK and his strong influence with his colleague, General Curtis LeMay in the early adoption of single side band for Air Force communications.
